A few years ago, perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui showed me a chord that was so irresistible that I couldn't get enough of it. At the time there was no project it would have suited, but every few months I would take the piece out of the closet just to smell it. That's the great luxury of working for Jo Malone London: that we have the time to find the right opportunity to bring new stories and scents to life. A few months earlier we had launched Poppy & Barley and heard about another poppy from Asia, which inspired us to create a Cologne Intense version of Poppy & Barley. It was clear that this particular accord should form the heart of the new fragrance, ”says Celine Roux, Head of Fragrance Development.
Our Cologne Intense Collection impresses with its precious ingredients and opulent, unexpected fragrances that are at home all over the world. This time we traveled to Asia, the home of the tall oriental poppy (Papaver orientale), whose petals of up to 20 centimeters in length are enthroned on meter-high stems. These special poppies are an expressive symbol of love. But how can this dramatic aesthetic be captured in fragrance?
The starting chord was velvety and powerful, and I wanted to build on that. As with a painting, you start with a core idea, which you then build on, ”says perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui. “The Scarlet Poppy accord is very lush and floral, as the flowers give the heart of the fragrance an extraordinary intensity. It is complemented by the gentle, velvety character of the Florentine iris and a heliotrope accord for a deep, powdery aroma. The Ambrette top note gives the fragrance a pleasant heaviness right from the start. "
The result: an enchanting, intense and sweet-decadent fragrance. According to Celine, it is “an outstanding fragrance that is nevertheless very elegant and refined.” This is how we spray dreams of exotic and distant lands.
